Week two-twenty-nine of Operation Graphite – theme: Heraldry.

Shock - Lion and Sea Monster Arms

Half the fun of coming up with a coat of arms is thinking about what too put on the shield. In fact, that is what takes the most time. The half lion, half sea monster idea is kind of neat. Not sure if I quite pulled it off, but with a little refinement, it could be pretty cool.

The theme selected for week two-thirty of Operation Graphite will be: Pokemon.

I will admit that I am a bit old for Pokemon, but if I was in middle school when it first came out in the US, I might now have that same nostalgia that many others have share for the newest game. Even if I was never into Pokemon, the idea of an big augmented reality online game is pretty awesome. I hope that idea will translate to other games. I can already imagine an augmented reality Ghostbusters game that could be awesome. This week, lets draw some weird anime monsters. Choose a creature from the pokedex, and see how well they fight.

Please submit any drawing or painting, using traditional or digital media, that fits the theme: Pokemon.

All art work is due 9 P.M. PST on Friday, 8.5.16. Submissions will be published the weekend of 8.6.16

Week two-twenty-eight of Operation Graphite – theme: Comic Book.

The forty seventh annual San Diego Comic Con has now drawn to a close. New trailers revealed, new project announcements, and hordes of cosplayers descended on the San Diego Convention Center this weekend. No doubt you’ve already seen articles about some of big geek news. I did not go to Comic Con this year, because I had grown up things to do, and being a grown up sucks.

The theme selected for week two-twenty-nine of Operation Graphite will be: Heraldry.

Family Crests, Coats of Arms, and all the other iconography associated with European heraldry has always fascinated me. Both the serious task of crafting an appropriate coat of arms, and also parodies of such heraldic images are great. I have several SCA friends who have crafted their own arms, adhering to very strict guidelines and diligently researching existing historical arms. This theme will allow much more freedom. You can complete the entire coat of arms with motto, helmet, crest and supporters, or just the shield, which in heraldry is called the escutcheon. If you want to mix it up, you can even delve into Japanese mon, which is another form of family symbol akin to heraldry.

Week two-twenty-seven of Operation Graphite – theme: Spaceship.

We might never have faster than light travel, we may never visit another star system, but as long as we keep looking up we will always wonder what distant worlds might be like elsewhere in the cosmos.

This week I wanted to dabble with more obscure comics, but realized that many might not be familiar with some comic titles, and there are so many titles I have not had a chance to read myself. So this week is an open comic book theme. Non DC or Marvel titles are encouraged, but not the rule. Any comic title is open.

Please submit any drawing or painting, using traditional or digital media, that fits the theme: Comic Book.

Week two-twenty-two of Operation Graphite – theme: Game of Thrones.

Shock - Tormund Giantsbane

Season six is over. Winter is here, R + L does = J, the Stark banners once again hang at Winterfell, and Khaleesi is sailing for Westeros with a pack of Dragons. It was a much more satisfying season than the last, and now we only have thirteen or so episodes spread out over the last two seasons.

The theme selected for week two-twenty-seven will be: Spaceship.

I found myself doodling spaceships the other day after reading about distant exoplanets. Thinking of interstellar spacecraft, I imagined what might a generational ship look like that might reach one of our nearer neighbors. Since, at this time, it does not seem like faster than light travel is possible, the closest we might get is a fraction of the speed of light. What would the propulsion source be? How large would it have to be? How many people could it hold? How long would the trip last?

Of the thousands of exoplanets that have been discovered, most are massive gas giants, some are rocky terrestrial worlds, but of those only a few are a comfortable proximity to their home star. Most of these potentially habitable worlds are hundreds or thousands of light years away, but the Star, Wolf 1061 is only 13.8 light years away and one of it’s planets might be in that Goldylocks zone. If one could travel half, or even three quarters the speed of light, one could arrive in that star system in 20 to 30 years later. For this Grey Op, you do not need to focus on possible interstellar space ships, you could draw rockets, space shuttles, Klingon Birds of Prey, or the Battlestar Galactica.

Week two-twenty-five of Operation Graphite – theme: Captain America.

Shock - Cap

Happy Forth of July! My neighborhood sounds like a war zone. What other comic character is more Patriotic than Captain America? A character so annoyingly patriotic I never was a fan of him till the Marvel movies. I’ll give credit to Chris Evans and the team heading up the MCU, they’ve taken a jockish boy scout of a character and created an idealistic and sympathetic hero out of time. One of the striking feelings I had after seeing Civil War was that Iron Man may have been the one who was more in the right, but Cap would have been the leader I would have been more inclined to followed. The creators intentionally made it so there was no right or wrong side, making the conflict between friends even tougher.
