The theme selected for week two-twenty-seven will be: Spaceship.

I found myself doodling spaceships the other day after reading about distant exoplanets. Thinking of interstellar spacecraft, I imagined what might a generational ship look like that might reach one of our nearer neighbors. Since, at this time, it does not seem like faster than light travel is possible, the closest we might get is a fraction of the speed of light. What would the propulsion source be? How large would it have to be? How many people could it hold? How long would the trip last?

Of the thousands of exoplanets that have been discovered, most are massive gas giants, some are rocky terrestrial worlds, but of those only a few are a comfortable proximity to their home star. Most of these potentially habitable worlds are hundreds or thousands of light years away, but the Star, Wolf 1061 is only 13.8 light years away and one of it’s planets might be in that Goldylocks zone. If one could travel half, or even three quarters the speed of light, one could arrive in that star system in 20 to 30 years later. For this Grey Op, you do not need to focus on possible interstellar space ships, you could draw rockets, space shuttles, Klingon Birds of Prey, or the Battlestar Galactica.

Week fifty three of Operation Graphite – Theme: Danger in Space!

Ahoy Cadets! Before I tell you about the perils of space travel, let us remember the great heroes who are immortalized for their Eff-you attitude to the to the deadly vacuum beyond the quasi safety of our fragile biosphere. There is a proposed mission to Mars that would be a one way trip to space madness. Thats right, one way, with no plan to bring you back. Now, maybe after ten years, they might figure out a way to shoot you home, but the idea is they send you the the Red Planet with no return in mind. Denis Tito is proposing his own Mars Mission. This one is to have Elon Musk shoot a crew in his SpaceX, Dragon Capsule in a mission to fly by Mars. Sure, it sounds easier, no landing, no orbit. The down side, it’s 501 day trip with a crew of 7 trapped in a capsule the size of a Honda Element. Just imagine the smell that would waft out of the capsule upon arrival. 501 days of no showering and only sponge baths with recycled urine. Perhaps it’s best not to.

mst3k-joelThe vacuum of space is a dangerous place. There is nothing quite like being frozen on one side, and burning on the other side; whilst the absence of atmospheric pressure collapses your lungs no matter how tight you try and hold your breath. I was pretty disappointed when I learned that a human body would not violently explode when it suddenly meets the vacuum of space. Not only can danger arise from simple mechanical errors and micro meteorites, something that real life astronauts face while in orbit;  there are pesky aliens, rogue scientists, asteroids, and China shooting down satellites. Even our own Sun will eventually become a danger as it swallows up the inner planets as it hits retirement age. It would sound much cooler, and perhaps even more accurate, if we stop referring to it as Space, and start calling it, “The Danger Zone.”

Week twenty four of Operation Graphite – Theme: Swamp Monster vs. Space Alien

What kind of alien creature would come across the galaxy, only to pick on poor miserable swamp creatures? I kinda feel bad for the beings that inhabit the muck of the bayou. This week we have a few examples of Aliens visiting the swamp. Everyone place your bets. Who do you think will win this battle?

Thank you for contributing.

The theme selected for week 24 of Operation Graphite will be: Swamp Monster vs. Space Mutant.

This week we will have a battle of the of the bizarre, and pit Swamp creatures from the muck and goo vs. Alien beings from another world. This will most likely end up being a battle of the squishy and juicy vs. the big headed and ray gun welding. It could be, squishy and juicy vs. mucky and slimy, too. Either way, there’ll be lots of great sound effect noises being made by the artists this week as they draw away.

Any drawing or painting, using traditional or digital media that fits the theme, Swap Monster vs. Space Alien, will be fair game.

All art work is due on Thursday 7.19.12. Submissions will be published the following Friday 7.20.12.
