Week one-sixty of Operation Graphite – theme: Renaissance.

Shock - Kriegsmesser

Advancements in science, art, and warfare -the Renaissance brought us Da Vinci and Galileo, but also brought the Inquisition and witch hunts. Progress is always a double edged sword, like any technology or advancement, it can be used to build, or to destroy.

Shock – Kriegsmesser

The theme selected for week one-sixty-one of Operation Graphite will be: Insect.

To some they are fascinating, to others they are terrifying. While most don’t reap the same hatred as arachnids, many insects are still highly loathed. But for every cockroach and mosquito, there’s a honey bee and a butterfly. This week we explore the biology of the six-legged invertebrates that outnumber us 300 to one.

Please submit any drawing or painting, using traditional or digital media, that fits the theme: Insect.

All art work is due on Thursday, 4.2.14 Submissions will be published the following Friday, 4.3.15

Week one-fifty-nine of Operation Graphite – theme: Metropolis.

There still is the idea that the city of the future could be a beacon of science and progress. While many of todays films and stories are mired in dystopian crime and dreariness, there still is a retro futuristic notion of what a future metropolis should be like. We may not ever have our flying cars, and all the railways may be better hidden underground, but we can still imagine a thriving metropolis where technology is beyond anything we thought possible.

It was a time of poofy shirts and starched ruffs. It was also a time of scientific, cultural and artistic innovation that spread though out Europe. The Renaissance is sometimes thought of as a historical period, but by others, more of a cultural and philosophical movement, that swept though Europe between the 14th and 17th Centuries. While some like to think back to this time in history as this shiny happy age of progress, It was not as nice as we imagine. Compared to Medieval times, it was actually would have been a whole lot more violent and awful if you had lived during this time; more warfare, more political corruption, witch hunts and the Inquisition. But, the art was still pretty nice.

Week one-fifty-eight of Operation Graphite – theme: A-Force.

Soon there will be an all female Ghostbusters, for a while there was a TV Show about the superhero girls in Gotham City, and now there is going to be an all women Avengers team. I’m kind of surprised it hadn’t happened sooner. Actually, an all female X-men (XX-Force?) is something could have seen even earlier. The Claremont years had the X-men roster almost even in the male to female ratio. Few other comics had so many female characters for a superhero comic. So not surpassingly, a big chunk of A-Force will be mutants, but it looks like quite a few other heroines will be joining this team.

Tomorrowland-Concept-Art-1

The full trailer for Tomorrowland is out; as we gush at the gorgeous, retro futuristic views of what we once thought the perfect future city would look like, we can try to create our own futuristic landscape. While you may favor the Tezuka approach, or perhaps the Lang approach to city planing, any story or character associated with a futuristic city would also be fair game.

Please submit any drawing or painting, using traditional or digital media, that fits the theme: Metropolis.

All art work is due on Thursday, 3.19.14 Submissions will be published the following Friday, 3.20.15

Week one-fifty-seven of Operation Graphite – theme: Whatever.

Sometimes its nice to have a free draw. While many times the themes may help inspire, often there are other ideas rattling around that don’t get a chance to get out. This week, free of constraints, we got a chance to draw whatever the hell we wanted to.

By now you may have seen the new trailer for, Age of Ultron. Marvel and the Avengers doing quite well with their Cinematic Universe. In the print world, Marvel is announcing another addition to the Avengers library, the all female, A-Force. Not to be confused with X-Force, though some of its members might be in there. Also, not to be confused with A-Team, unless Storm decides to go back to her rad 80’s mohawk. Not only will the characters be all women, but the writers of the series are all women thus far as well. The team ups were made to contrast different powers and personalities, cause apparently one rule in the Avengers is they always be fighting with each other as much as they fight the enemy.
