Week one-twenty-one of Operation Graphite – theme: Cowboy Bebop.

Shock - Jet Black

For many Ameircans, Cowboy Bebop is the Gold Standard Anime series. There have been many great shows before, and others have continued after, but always something about that first show. For many, Bebop was the first anime series that captured their imagination back in the 90’s. In a long line of misfits, outlaws and rag tag crews crammed in a tiny space ship, Bebop continues to be one of the coolest sci-fi, space adventure stories.

The Fourth of July is already around the corner. Another round of parades, fire works, and back yard barbecues. While certainly open to the men elected as president of the United States, the theme is open to any founding father (or mother), historical icon, or elected officials who have made an indelible mark on US History.

Please submit any drawing or painting, using traditional or digital media, that fits the theme: US History Icon.

All art work is due on Thursday, 7.3.13 Submissions will be published on Independence day, the following Friday, 7.4.13

Week one-twenty of Operation Graphite – theme: Inventors and Industrialists.

Shock - JP

The big brains, the big money, and the big ambition. These are the figures who built modern industry, for better or worse. Some have been vilified, some have been praised, many have companies or buildings in there name to this day.

The one anime series that is perhaps the most responsible for sucking Americans into the art form around the turn of the Millennium, Cowboy Bebop was, and still is, one of the most popular anime shows of all time. A bizarre blend of various genres, including detective noir, Hong Kong action, Comedy and American western, Bebop also had a soundtrack of blues and jazz further adding to the eclectic mix. I’m also pretty sure that the show also started the whole corgi craze with the nerd folk. and who wouldn’t want a super intelligent Corgi?

Week one-ninteen of Operation Graphite – theme: Game of Thrones.

Shock - The Viper and The Mountain

Sunday is the last episode in season four of Game of Thrones, plenty of time to have your heart broken as another favorite character dies. Does George R.R. Martin have a sick desire to emotionally crush all of his fans, is he actively rebelling against normal narrative conventions and predictable formulas, or is it kind of like Whedon’s reasoning behind killing off popular characters? Unless any character can die at any time, you will never truly be afraid that a character will not survive an obstacle. Perhaps it’s a little bit of all three. I’d say there are four or so characters from A Song of Fire and Ice that will be sticking around for a while, but all those other characters, death is just waiting for the right time. And in the end, all men (and women) must die.

We can include a wide and peculiar bunch of folks for this theme. Some are praised, some are demonized, but all have shaped the world we live in. From Tesla and Carnage to Musk and Zuckerberg, this week we focus on those who thought big, for better or fore worse.

Please submit any drawing or painting, using traditional or digital media, that fits the theme: Inventors and Industrialists.

Week one-eighteen of Operation Graphite – theme: Flash Gordon.

Shock - Ming

One of the big inspirations for the Star Wars trilogy, the Flash Gordon serials of the 30’s were  also an inspiration most of the Sci-Fi put to screen since then. Ming the Merciless has been the template for not only Darth Vader, but for all the totalitarian, space lords since. Remember that whey you start getting hints of Thanos in the next few Marvel Films.

The season is wapping up, only two more episodes left to see which favorite character (or several all at once) die tragically. I’m still a little shaken after the little dance between the Viper and the Mountain. I haven’t read the books, so I don’t know what kind of heartbreak I should prepare myself for. Every episode is a white knuckle experience, just waiting for something bad to happen.

Please submit any drawing or painting, using traditional or digital media, that fits the theme: Game of Thrones.
