Week one-o-four of Operation Graphite – theme: Star Wars.

Shock - Droopy Chewy

I was really excited for the Star Wars theme,  but due to a lack of time I just dialed in a quick sketch. “E” for effort, right? Whatever, off to my 4 hour commute.

The theme selected for week one-o-five of Operation Graphite will be: The Brothers Grimm.

Manny of the folk and fairy tales that children in both Europe and the US grew up on were told to us by the Brothers Grimm. These two academics pretty much invented the modern discipline of Folklore Studies.  Though they didn’t create them, these two German brothers cataloged and published much many of the classic folktales. These same tales would later be Disneyified and sanitized, but even their versions were actually less, grim, than the original medieval stories.

Please submit any drawing or painting, using traditional or digital media, that fits the theme: The Brothers Grimm.
All art work is due on Thursday, 3.6.13. Submissions will be published the following Friday, 3.7.13

Week one-o-three of Operation Graphite – theme: Big Ass Truck.

Shock - Zombie Stomper

Every time I see a truck on the freeway that looks like it could drive over my tiny car, I wonder what is the point of taking that behemoth on the 405 if you aren’t just going to steam roll right over the gridlock. And even though the A-hole who drives that beast would probably take up two or three parking spaces, deep down I really would love to drive one of those monster trucks. I sure as hell wouldn’t want to pay for the gas needed by one, or try and parallel park one of those beasts.

There have been a few, more focused Grey Ops, that concerned the events from, “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.” For the first time we will open up the entire Star Wars universe for inspiration. It’s not a very large universe though, weren’t there only three movies?

Please submit any drawing or painting, using traditional or digital media, that fits the theme: Star Wars.

Week one-o-two of Operation Graphite – theme: Castlevania.

Of all the games in that I played growing up in the age of the NES, the Castlevania series were some of my all time favorites. Mashing all the Universal monsters, and pretty much any other monster from mythology that worked, Castlevania was one of the first horror adventure games. Fitting that the first time I played Castlevania, was also at the sleep over where I first saw a similar Universal Monster mashup, The Monster Squad.

For some, it’s status symbol and measure of automotive machismo. Others might see it as a garish and ridicules. Weather you are in the camp that likes to hang a pair of chrome testicles on the trailer hitch or your lifted F350, or if you someone who see’s the flamboyant display of ostentatious machinery as a sign of ones inadequate genital size; Big Ass Trucks are fair game this week for either praise or ridicule.

Week One-o-one of Operation Graphite – theme: Smokey the Bear.

Shock - You Did This

No sooner did I mention the terrible drought in Southern California, and we ended up having a few days of rain. It is LA rain of course, more of a heavy drizzle. But that drizzle is typically called “Storm of the Century” buy most local news stations in So Cal. Slick roads and bad drivers are also a fun combo. But a little rain is better than none, and hopefully there will be some more to green up the place, and maybe even hold off another devastating fire season.

Perhaps one of the most popular, but also strange video game franchises, is the Castlevania series. Though it has an oddly hodgepodged name, and a hero with a questionable choice in weaponry, Castlevania and the Belmont family are Legendary. “Lets give Conan a bullwhip and have him fight Dracula,” which is how I imagine that pitch for that going, became a video game epic. But why a whip? Some say Prince Vlad III of Wallachia was whipped by his Turkish captors when he and his brother were hostages of the Ottoman empire. Would a whip then have some sort extra power against Vlad Tepes? Then again, maybe a whip just had a little bit extra reach in old school 8 bit Nintendo games.
