Week two-twenty-four of Operation Graphite -theme: Keanu.

This week wasn’t about saving a cat from local gangsters, but it was about the difficulty of pulling off portraits. Especially when there is a subtle expression, portraits and stylized caricatures are extraordinarily tough.

The Fourth of July is approaching, and what is more American than Captain America. Probably a bunch of things, but I have the mind of a twelve year old, and want to draw comic book characters.

Please submit any drawing or painting, using traditional or digital media, that fits the theme: Captain America.

Week two-twenty-four of Operation Graphite – theme: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

I love the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and I realize how ridiculous that sounds for someone my age. Yes, I know there have been some god awful incarnations of the Ninja Turtles, but when I think of those four brothers, I feel about them now the same way I thought about them when I was ten years old. Maybe I wouldn’t feel the same way if there wasn’t currently a TMNT incarnation that was pretty spectacular. I might still give the new live acton one a try, but the computer animated series is one of the best things ever.

I saw the movie poster for that Key and Peele movie, Keanu and it hit me, that would be a fun theme! So this week we celebrate an actor who most people make fun of for playing an airhead early in his career, but in real life is actually a really great guy. There are a few pretty awesome movies he’s done too.

Week two-twenty-two of Operation Graphite – theme: Monster.

Shock - Sea Monster

We’re are back from an unplanned absence. The Deer theme might come back again, but this week was all about monsters. I like monsters a lot, and pretty much anything similar to a monster – aliens, mutants or mythological chimera. Monsters make good bad guys, but monsters also make great good guys. Thats kinda why I’ve always loved Hellboy, Chewbacca and Toothless. But besides a good vs. bad dualism, some monsters just, are. Some monsters, like Kraken or Xenomorphs, just do what they need to do to survive. They don’t think or feel, they just endure and multiply.

There is another TMNT movie coming out. I didn’t see the last Michael Bay live action incarnation of the Turtles, but I hear this new one might be slightly more tolerable. Either way, the Nickelodeon cartoon is fantastic, and might be the best incarnation of the Heroes in a half shell.

Why did they call them that? Heroes in a Half Shell, it’s stuck with them since the 80’s cartoon, but half shell is a reference to shucked oysters. Not only is that not even the same animal family, but half shelling a Ninja Turtle is something only a bad guy would want to do. Maybe instead of the Shredder, he should be the Shucker.

Operation objective: FAILED
For the first time in over three years I missed a grey op, and there was no back up to cover me. It’s only the third grey op I’ve missed, but no one else submitted this week. The first mission failure.

Excuses aside, I figured I could either stay up late and half ass something, or I could get some much needed sleep.

I went with sleep.
