The theme selected for week one-fourteen of Operation Graphite will be: Muppets.

There is a special place in the hearts of many who grew up in the 70’s and 80’s for a bunch of felt and feather puppets. A recent revival has brought the Muppets back to the main stream, but as with any beloved character, when it’s obvious the voice is different, things just never seem the same. While I still love those fuzzy weirdos, and all their relatives, something has been missing since 1990.

Please submit any drawing or painting, using traditional or digital media, that fits the theme: Muppets.

All art work is due on Thursday, 5.8.13. Submissions will be published the following Friday, 5.9.13

Week one-twelve of Operation Graphite – theme: Quicksilver.

Shock - Silver airstream suit

Did you know that the actors who play Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch in the upcoming Age of Ultron are both in this summer’s Godzilla remake? That just caught me as odd. As for the suit, while I left out any lightning bolts, I did like the idea of silver being a defining aspect, and perhaps some sort of high reflective suit with air channels make some sense. High speed with wind and thermal variables might call for such a metallic body suit. Goggles might be a good idea two, just think of the dry eye at those speeds.

Week one-eleven of Operation Graphite – theme: Weird Coworker.

Shock - Sea Shanties

I’m not saying your weird coworker is unlikeable, I’m not saying that weird is bad, but that one guy (or girl) at work is a wee bit strange. Maybe the workplace is better for it.

For the first time, Marvel Studios, and Twentieth Century Fox will share characters. While they are all Marvel characters, different studios have feature rights to different characters and franchises, even if Marvel now has its own production studio. In both X-men: Days of Future Past, and The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Scarlet Witch, and her speedy brother, Quicksilver will appear. Neither studio had exclusive rights, so both were able to create different versions for each movie, both coming out with in a year of each other. There has already been some internet rumblings disapproving of one or both costumes for Quicksilver, so this week our job is to redesign the look of the faster than lightning estranged son of Magneto. Can you give him a look that isn’t laughable and still evokes his comic outfit?

Please submit any drawing or painting, using traditional or digital media, of your costume redesign for: Quicksilver.

All art work is due on Thursday, 4.24.13. Submissions will be published the following Friday, 4.25.13

Week one-ten of Operation Graphite – theme: Mad Max.

Shock - Feral Child

Perhaps the idea existed earlier in literature, but nothing really ignited the idea of Post Apocalyptic, Neo Tribal, Wasteland Bandit quite like the Mad Max films. And lets be honest, while all of them are entertaining, its the second in the series, that is a rare and almost perfect film. No other film I can think of really fits the term, Art house Action movie, like The Road Warrior. The open road never felt so desolate and the adversaries never seemd so bizarrely terrifying as in that film.

We’ve all had them, those odd coworkers that ether disrupt, or make our job bearable. They might be weird, odd, crazy, quirky, or just plain silly. Maybe you endure them, maybe you pick on them, maybe you encourage them, or maybe you are the Weird Coworker? At someplace so awful like work, why on Earth would you want to act normal?

Please submit any drawing or painting, using traditional or digital media, that fits the theme: Weird Coworker.

All art work is due on Thursday, 4.17.13. Submissions will be published the following Friday, 4.18.13

Week one-o-nine of Operation Graphite – theme: 80’s Sitcom.

Shock - Bull Shannon

You can tell a little about a person by looking at the kind of sitcoms they favored in their formative years. While I certainly watched lots of the family based sitcoms. For me, the weirder and more screwball the better. Night Court was one of my absolute favorites. Sadly, I haven’t been able to see it recently to see for my self if it still holds up after all these years.

The theme selected for week one-ten of Operation Graphite will be: Mad Max.

Road Warrior mohawk

Every year, there is a little Mad Max inspired gathering in the desert. The Wasteland Weekend is kind of a mini Burning man for Road Warrior wannabes. Perhaps it didn’t start the Diesel Punk genre, but Mad Max and it’s sequels certainly became the defining trilogy, and soon to be a Reboot with Tom Hardy.

Please submit any drawing or painting, using traditional or digital media, that fits the theme: Mad Max.
