Week two-fifty-two of Operation Graphite – theme: Gangster

I don’t know why I always default to Batman. That’s just how my brain works, I guess. We are fascinated by gangsters, we simultaneously know they are bad, but admire their moxie and success. So what does it say about one Gotham City character who hides behind a prop?

Shock – Scarface.

The theme selected for week two-fifty-three of Operation Graphite will be: Year of the Cock.

Yes, I realize “Year of the Rooster” is more friendly term, but violently vulgar “C” words are just so fucking fun to say. And lets be honest, 2017 being the Year of the Cock is pretty god damn appropriate. Also factoring the Chinese 12 year, Lunar cycle with the Five Elements of Chinese astrology, this is specifically the year of the Fire Rooster. I’m not making this shit up. Over a millennia ago, ancient Chinese astrologers predicted 2017 is when a Cock would try to burn everything down.

Week two-fifty-one of Operation Graphite – theme: Scumbag.

I was thinking about doing a lovely portrait of William Atherton, but time and initiative were not on my side. I’ve had enough scumbags on my mind recently, and couldn’t get very motivated this week. I think this generic guy might be a used car. I wouldn’t trust him.

Organized crime is a strange thing, there will always be those who glorify slimy, corrupt criminals. Perhaps there is an appreciation for success, or making one owns rules. There have been notable mobsters and gangsters though out history and fiction. Who is your favorite gangster, or the one you despise most?

Please submit any drawing or painting, using traditional or digital media, that fits the theme: Gangster.

Week two-fifty of Operation Graphite – theme: Troll.

Trolls come in a variety of shapes, sizes and temperaments. Some might only bother you if you tread to closely, some might purposely hunt you down, some are small and hide under bridges, some are huge and roam the frozen forests of Scandinavia. Either way, you probabaly don’t want to meet one.

Scumbags, they are those narcissistic, thin skinned, bullying cesspools of moral bankruptcy. Yet on the other hand, they make great bad guys. They may not be as enjoyable as the charmingly sinister, evil geniuses, but it is much more enjoyable when they finally get taken down. Some great scumbags include that bag of dicks who shut down the Containment Unit, or that piece of shit who let the face huggers loose on Newt and Ripley. There’s also Gordon Gekko and most of the characters Bill Paxton plays. Man, the 80’s were a great time for move scumbags.

Week two-forty-nine of Operation Graphite – theme: In Memoriam.

shock-fidget

We lost a lot of great people this year, and it was hard to pick someone to honor. It was hard to think up something too with a long week of artists block. Carrie Fisher’s passing was pretty major, but there have been no shortages of memorial artwork for her. Kenny Baker, another Star Wars Alumni also passed this year, and hasn’t had near the attention. Instead of portraying him in his R2-D2 tin can, I went with his character from another of my favorite movies, Terry Gilliam’s Time Bandits.

Trolls, They are pretty much grade A, bastard A-holes. Hiding under bridges, in online comment sections, or other areas waiting to hinder, belittle or devour unlikely prey. There may be the occasional Wally Trollman, or fun, crazy haired variety, but for the most part trolls are the worst. Now go draw one.

Please submit any drawing or painting, using traditional or digital media, that fits the theme: Troll.

Week two-forty-eight of Operation Graphite – theme: Krampus.

shock-krampus

There is certainly a much more romantic spin to this particular Krampus, and I wonder if the striking, satyr like appearance is due to recently seeing images from the live action Beauty and the Beast trailer. Krampus is is usually depicted much more demonic and beastly in Germany, but the pan like satyr is also related to festivals of the Romans. With Saturnalia being one of the original European winter festivals, and Yule being the Germanic winter festival, a satyr and gift giving version of Odin  teaming up seems appropriate for modern winter celebrations. Just don’t piss them off.
