Week fifty eight of Operation Graphite – theme: Jack Kirby.

Wave to Zen La

This week was crazy, and I nearly didn’t have time to do a drawing. So I totally understand others not being able to make it. This being the first solo mission, it’s fitting that I drew lonely Norrin Radd in his quest to find home. I hope to see more of the team next week, but I understand. This year is going to be a dewsy for me, and I wonder if I will be able to keep it up each week.

This week’s theme will be “Victory.” It can be a major, epic victory, or it can be one of those little victories that we’ve all experienced. No matter the size, we all strive to be the victor, and we hope to feast on the fruits of our success.

Please submit any drawing or painting, using traditional or digital media, that fits the theme: Victory.

All art work is due on Thursday 4.4.13. Submissions will be published the following Friday 4.5.13

Week fifty seven of Operation Graphite – theme: Pie.

Why is it when you love something, you add human like traits to it? It’s one thing when we anthropomorphize our pets, but it’s really strange when we then take inanimate objects and force a fantasy of sentience on them. Cars, and devices we use daily, ones that tend to have an almost human temperaments make some sense. But consumables, to give a face to something you stuff in yours, that’s kinda weird. Do you think of an apple screaming as you maw chunks of its juicy flesh off? If it was once an animal, that’s one thing I guess. There’s something rather fascinating about the idea of food that would try to eat you.

002

One of the people responsible for creating, and co creating, some of the most popular comic book characters ever; Jack Kirby is truly one of the legends of comics. Besides the traditional super heroes he worked on, like Captain America, the Hulk, and the Fantastic Four, one of his real niches was bizarre Sci-Fi. For Marvel he created the the Silver Surfer and The Inhumans, for DC he created Darkseid and the New Gods. Kirby had a look all his own, and a knack for some of the strangest space operas in comics.

Week fifty six of Operation Graphite – theme: Tarzan.

Every time I got to an Army surplus store, I always take a minute to look at the machetes. I know I want a machete, but know I don’t NEED a machete. And that’s just it, I wished I needed a machete. Arid Southern California doesn’t really have environments that require hacking your way though. I guess I have a strange craving for the jungle, even if I wasn’t raised there like Tarzan was. Maybe it’s really just the craving to get away from the city.

There are few things in life more wonderful than pie, and for the things that are possibly better than pie, there’s often a slang term using the word pie. That’s just how great pie is; almost everything is better with a pie crust, sweet or savory. In a first of food related themes, we will illustrate our obsession with this simple culinary masterpiece.

Please submit any drawing or painting, using traditional or digital media, that fits the theme: Pie.

Week fifty five of Operation Graphite – theme: Hellboy.

A creative journey into the Hellboy verse often leads to a study  in shadows, both in tone and in actual thick, chunky, blacked out space. Hellboy, with all his enemies and allies seem right at home on on the terminator of light.

Tarzan doesn’t spend 3 hours everyday commuting to work in a beat up car. Tarzan doesn’t stare at a god damn computer monitor for every miserable hour of his awful job, only to go home and stair at another f’ing monitor for hours on Facebook. To Tarzan, a spread sheet is what he has before he sets up tent, and Excel is something he does when pitted against a blood thirsty gorilla. Tarzan is all about the romance and escapism of fleeing the industrialized world. Tarzan doesn’t have to worry about moving his car on street sweeping days. Tarzan doesn’t have a coworker who constantly tries to undermine him. Tarzan doesn’t have to live in your abysmal world of concrete and steel.

Please submit any drawing or painting, using traditional or digital media, that fits the theme: Tarzan.

Week fifty four of Operation Graphite  – theme: Year of the Snake.

Apparently the year of the snake is fairly unlucky. During years of the Dragon, the birthrate goes way up in China. However, for years of the Snake, the Birthrate drops. Few choose to have children born under that sign. Just as the snake is demonized in western culture, the Chinese also view the snake as an inauspicious sign. The Stock market crash and beginning of the Great Depression, the Attack on Pearl Harbor, the Tiananmen Square massacre, and the September 11th attack all happened in years of the Snake. Sorry to begin 2013 on a downer, but this might be a challenging year.
