Week twenty one of Operation Graphite – Theme: Hand Study

This week we continued to exercise our art ability with a hand study theme. While Comic books and pop culture remain our bread and butter, it is good to keep working on the basics. We will, from time to time, want to have a more academic theme. I do promise, we will never have an Operation Graphite theme of, “Fruit Basket Still Life.”

Thank you for contributing.

The theme selected for week twenty two of Operation Graphite will be: New Mutant

Next week we are going to play with the mutants in the Marvel universe. Instead of working with the more obscure team, “The New Mutants,” the mission is to create our own mutant character. For your new mutant character, think of his or her powers and name; then design the appearance of your new mutant.

Please submit a drawing or painting, using traditional or digital media, of your new mutant.

All art work is due on Thursday 7.5.12. Submissions will be published the following Friday 7.6.12.

Mutant and proud.

Week twenty of Operation Gaphite – Theme: Children’s Literature Character / Superhero Mash-up

In the immortal words of Dark Helmet, “Now you see that evil will always triumph, because good is dumb.” Once again, for a superhero themed week, the villains out number the heroes. Surprisingly, all DC too. Now if you would excuse me, I have to waste the rest of my day watching clips of Spaceballs on youtube.

The theme selected for week twenty one of Operation Graphite will be: Hand Study

For something that can often be difficult to capture just right, we’ve all got one in front of us. Hands are always a challenge, so this week lets do a Hand Study. Grips, open handed, or some other fingerly gesture.

Please submit a drawing or painting, using traditional or digital media, of your Hand Study.

All art work is due on Thursday 6.28.12. Submissions will be published the following Friday 6.29.12.

[waves good bye]

Week nineteen of Operation Graphite – Theme: Squire

The squires have all assembled in the court, and it appears that for each knight they serve, they fulfill a different role. Maybe later we’ll throw them all in the Circle of Death and watch ’em fight it out with each other, see who’s the victor. No, that would be cruel, and The Knights wouldn’t even be able to get back up on their saddle with out the aid of their squire. It’s surpassing how useless those knights are alone.

Thank you for protecting your knight, who is protecting the realm.

The theme selected for week twenty of Operation Graphite will be: Children’s literature character / Superhero mash-up

This week we will be taking one of our favorite characters from children’s Literature and combining them with superheroes. Possibilities include taking a beloved character and creating a mash up with that character with and a popular superhero. Other possibilities include taking the art style of a popular children’s book, and illustrating a superhero in that manner.

Any drawing or painting, using traditional or digital media combining a Children’s literature character or style, and a Superhero character or theme is fair game.

All art work is due on Thursday 6.21.12. Submissions will be published the following Friday 6.22.12.

Goodnight Moon Knight.

Week Eighteen of Operation Graphite – Theme: Self Portrait

It’s nice to put a face to someones artwork, but a self portrait is rarely a mere physical description. Often there are hits to an artist’s personality and state of mind woven into the portrait. Sometimes those hints are less subtile, and an image can serve as a psychological window to the artist. Here are a few windows in to minds of the Graphite Corps.

Thank you for depicting yourself.

The theme selected for week nineteen of Operation Graphite will be: Squire.

This week we are tasked with creating our own personal squire. In ye olde times, a squire was the shield or armor bearer for a Medieval Knight. Sometimes they were knights in training, sometimes they were simply an assistant to the feudal warrior. Whether your Squire helps you with your lance and shield, coconut shells as you quest for the Holy Grail, or your morning latte; you get to custom design and name your very own squire.

Please submit a drawing or painting, using traditional or digital media of your custom Squire, along with his or her name.

All art work is due on Thursday 6.14.12. Submissions will be published the following Friday 6.15.12.

To Camelot!

Week seventeen of Operation Graphite – Theme: Unconventional Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

It’s is hard to tell if Unconventional Horsemen of the Apocalypse would still need a horse. Is it the absence of that horse that makes the bringers of doom, unconventional? Apparently that is the case, as both submissions have done away with the Equine portion of the description. They can certainly still bring about the end of the world.

Shock – Lone Biker of the Apocalypse

Thank you for turning the sun black, like sackcloth, and the moon blood red.
