Week ninety seven of Operation Graphite – theme: Atomic Age.

Atomic Age sci-fi might encompass a few sub genres, and many of the classic Atomic age stories and characters actually originated in the earlier, Golden Age of Sci-fi. While the genera is not as rigidly defined as Steampunk or Space Opera, there is something about the post war sci-fi that stands apart from other ages. Something about fear of the atom, paired with a new vigor for exploration and modernization make an interesting cocktail.

After the detonation of the Gadget, the world would forever know the awesome destructive power of the Atom. That power could either fuel the Space Age, or leave the world in ruin. After WWII, the power of the atom unlocked immeasurable possibilities for what the future could hold, yet there was also a dark shadow to these new discoveries. Atomic Kaiju and Cold War fear mixed with visions of traveling across the stars filled Sci-Fi stories. It was an age were some saw nothing but the wonders of science, while others warned of the horrors it unleash.
