Week two-seventeen of Operation Graphite – theme: Iron Man.

I’m not going to ruin anything about Captain America: Civil War, and the epic battle between Iron Man and Cap. Iron Man flops back and forth between jerk-face D-Bag, and reforming bad boy trying to make good. The first Iron Man is pretty fantastic, Starks arc from war profiteer to hero is fantastic. Then the second installment painted him as a spoiled asshole again. Avengers, he was kinda back on track, a little verbally combative, but thats mostly due to Joss thriving when writing characters pitied against each other. Starks third solo film was good, but even when trying to be decent, he still kinda came off like a jerk. Then there was Age of Ultron, where the whole crisis in the film is due to Starks run away ego. In this sixth film staring RDJ as Iron Man, and with another paycheck worth more than the GDP of a small country, Stark actually had some great character moments and you feel his side just as much as you feel for Caps. It was a great movie, for both for Cap and Stark.

The theme selected for week two-seventeen of Operation Graphite will be: Iron Man.

My son is obsessed with Iron Man. He’s hit that wonderful stage where he’s really into superheroes. I suppose my geek dad interests are wearing off on him. Most of what he knows is from the cute stylized kids toys. Then I showed him the least violent clips on youtube, which are usually the suiting up and flying shots. He has his favorites in both Marvel and DC, but Iron Man is his absolute favorite. He loves the suit, and who can blame him. The movie Iron Man suit is pretty bad ass. I’ve made one simple mask for him, and I’ve been working on a MkII made out of craft foam to replace the cardboard and marker MkI. Don’t think I have the time to pull of some of the more amazing DIY Iron Man projects I’ve seen online. I haven’t the heart to tell my boy (nor would he understand) that Tony Stark is kind of an arrogant, douchy asshole. Daddy’s team Cap.

Week sixty of Operation Graphite – theme: Avengers part 2.

Alright Avengers, lets take a look at the new recruits. The next fight might be a tough one. After all, I don’t think we’ll be up against another army, who’ll mysteriously all die once the their Mother Ship gets destroyed. I thought they were aliens too, not robots. What the hell was that, the Phantom Menace!?! We are going to be up against Thanos next… wait, not Thanos? He was just a tease. Well fear not, there will be shawarma and quippy dialogue for all.

The theme selected for week sixty of Operation Graphite will be: The Avengers part 2.

Marvel Phase 2 begins this May with Iron Man 3. Since the first Avengers made a Billion or so, part two is defiantly in the works. And a new Avengers movie means new Avengers team members. This week for Operation Graphite, we will revisit the Marvel Universe. The mission is to take one of the many other Avengers who have not been reimagined for the silver screen, and design the look and costume for that character. Some concept work is already online for Falcon, and the test footage for Ant-man has been leaked. Which other members would you like to see in Avengers Part 2?

Please submit a drawing or painting, using traditional or digital media of your Avenger.

All art work is due on Thursday 4.11.13. Submissions will be published the following Friday 4.12.13
