Week one-o-six of Operation Graphite – theme: Vikings.

Shock - Slaughter Pile

If we grade the entire middle ages on a curve, can we cut the Vikings some slack? Without them, there would be no Thor, or Marvel’s version of Thor with its creative liberties. We wouldn’t have the Icelandic Viking sagas and their rich, but violently brutal mythology. Sure, they were bastards, but they were genius bastards. There innovative ship building alone was revolutionary. When the news of the Kiev protests broke out, and ramparts of flaming tires illuminated images of medieval armored rebels, I rememberd that that was a city founded by the Vikings, and centuries later, those are still some guys not to mess with when pissed off.

Shock – Slaughter Pile

The theme selected for week one-o-six will be: Vikings.

Since we’ve pasted American Football season, it is safe to bring up the age when roving bands of Scandinavian raiders were the scourge of Europe. Vikings are a tough group to tackle. While in one respect they are universally hailed for being absolute bad asses. The idea of fierce Viking warriors is a token of pride by those whose ancestry hails from Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Even for those who don’t have a drop of Norse blood in them, the ideas of Courage, Strength and Valor are admired. Of course there is the fact that the Vikings were assholes, complete fucking assholes. In some cases, the Vikings who raided and raped their way along the coast were outcast from Scandinavia. The explorers who settled Iceland, Greenland and even America were pushed further and further from their homelands, mostly because they were such total assholes that were kicked out of civilized Europe. Perhaps I’m being harsh, after all, back in those days just about everyone would have been considered psychotic, murderous assholes. Ah, the Middle Ages.
