Week one-eighty-seven of Operation Graphite – theme: Demon.

Shock - Pazuzu

We all think of demons as evil spirits corrupting or tormenting the righteous. Mythology isn’t always so black and white, even if some like to see it that way. Take for instance the ancient Sumerian demon Pazuzu. Hollywood has forever type cast this demon of drought and famine as the tormenter of Regan MacNeil. Yet, in ancient Mesopotamia, this demon was actually invoked as a protector. Little Pazuzu amulets were used to ward of a much more terrifying demon, one that preyed on the unborn and young children. So, even in ancient times, parents were so paranoid about harm befalling their children. Would you invite a terrible demon into your home if it promised to keep your children safe? That sounds like a fantastic plot for a sitcom.
