Week one-sixty-eight of Operation Graphite – theme: Age of Sail.

The idea of getting away has been a persistent fantasy for millennia. For many years, before planes and cars helped whisk us away, if one truly wanted to get away from things, a long trip by sea was the only method. And so, it was the open sea that came to embody escape and adventure. And so the majestic tall ships have endured as positive reminders of the age of sail. Pirates, scurvy, sea sickness and ship crushing colossal squid were always the flip side to the overwhelmingly rosy nostalgia for those days, but no journey was really epic unless there was a strong possibility that an enormous cephalopod would snatch you off the deck of your ship and snap you into bits with hits sharp beak. Life at sea was grim, but life on land was pretty damn grim as well.
