The theme selected for week one-sixty-four of Operation Graphite will be: Battle Beasts.

Battle Beasts were toys from the 80’s; anthropomorphic warriors in robotic armor with little heat sensitive stickers to indicate their special power. The figure’s gimmick was a Rock, Paper, Scissors style of combat, where each Battle Beast had a sticker that reviled either Fire, Water or Wood power. However, in Japan Battle Beasts were called, Beast Formers and were a spin-off of the Transformers line of toys. Each Beast Former was originally either an Autobot or Decepticon, Just like their transforming robot brethren. Though the tie-in to the robots in disguise was dropped when Hasbro licensed them in the US, Battle Beasts were still very popular, perhaps the small, inexpensive nature of the toy helped its success.

Since then, Battle Beasts have had a small resurgence, along with many of the other toys and entertainment of from the 80’s There were new versions of the figures planed, and even a comic book series depicting the non Transformer version of the Battle Beast universe.

Please submit any drawing or painting, using traditional or digital media, that fits the theme: Battle Beasts.

All art work is due on Thursday, 4.23.14 Submissions will be published the following Friday, 4.24.15
